Hi, my name is
I'm an upcoming software engineer passionate about building efficient, scalable systems and solving real-world problems through code.
I'm Ralph J. Deshommes, a Computer Science student at Florida Atlantic University (Class of 2027) and a first-generation engineer. I grew up in Boynton Beach, Florida, with no family or community ties to tech, so FAU became my way in. Everything since has been on me to pursue: two summers as a Software Engineer Intern at Givelify, a stack of full-stack projects built on my own time, and a steady rhythm of hackathons and algorithms coursework.
I learn by building. At Givelify, working on production systems pushed me past writing code that just works and into thinking seriously about reliability and scale, lessons I'm now applying to system design and machine learning.
Outside of class, I'm building a web app and a mobile app, while pushing further into AI and system design on my own, with a RAG-based system next on the roadmap. Not because an assignment requires it, but because I want to already be operating at that level before a job demands it. Software engineering is where I'm focused, though I'm equally drawn to research-driven work where my background is a fit.
I'm active in NSBE and a regular at ShellHacks, where I get to build alongside engineers from completely different disciplines. Off the keyboard, I'm usually on a basketball court, tending to my sugar cane, or deep into a video game.

A Python tool built at ShellHacks 2026 to help 5 utilities coordinate planned transmission projects by finding where they overlap. It parses PDF filings with PyMuPDF and locates 224 of 252 projects (89%) with OpenStreetMap, condenses 457 nearby project pairs into 57 ranked coordination opportunities by merging duplicate circuits and weighting distance over schedule, and rejects false location matches with state, line-span, and transmission-zone checks. Results appear on an interactive map and an Excel export. I wrote most of the PDF parsing and the matching logic.
View on GitHubA recipe app for iOS and Android built with React Native and a Node.js REST API on a 13-table MySQL schema, with the database and storage on Azure. A TTL caching layer with graceful degradation serves repeat ingredient searches from cache instead of calling the external recipe API, cutting search latency by 99%. Ranking works across two recipe sources, and recommendations weight ratings above saved recipes.
A full-stack social platform where gardeners share posts, troubleshoot plant issues, and track plant growth. Built the backend around JWT authentication and authorization, with role-based access, media stored in Google Cloud Storage so the API stays stateless, threaded multi-level comments, and offset pagination for fast first loads. Optimized JOINs and correlated subqueries cut database round-trips per feed load by 75%. Built and tested locally with 100+ sample posts; it has no live users.
A browser-based webcam app that turns a live camera feed into a black-and-white silent film, with animated grain, projector flicker, and scratch overlays rendered in vanilla JavaScript and CSS, no backend or build step. Wired up the Web Speech API to transcribe speech in real time and cut it onto ornamental intertitle cards, sizing each card's on-screen hold time from its transcript length. Added live facial-landmark tracking with MediaPipe FaceLandmarker to pin three period face filters, a mustache, top hat, and monocle, to 12 tracked landmarks via the Canvas 2D API, and designed the app to degrade gracefully to a camera-and-music-only mode when speech recognition isn't available.

A desktop app that demonstrates symmetric and asymmetric encryption end to end, from RSA key generation to Fernet-based file encryption, in a tabbed interface that keeps text and file workflows separate and previews selected images inline. Verified correctness with 6 automated tests covering key generation, encryption and decryption round-trips, and tamper detection, written as a pytest suite decoupled from the GUI layer.
